How We Completed the Transperth Bus Station Commercial Resurfacing
Initial Consultation
Before commencing the project, our team conducted a thorough site assessment to understand what would be required to bring the bus station back up to a safe commercial asphalt standard. During this initial stage, we also worked directly with the Transperth team to understand, and advise on, additional requirements for the jobs competition, such as potential changes to the bus route and schedule and traffic and pedestrian management.
Ensuring Site Safety
Before we began, several steps were necessary to ensure the safety of all pedestrians, as well as communicate to frequent Transperth travelers the changes that were being made as part of the bus station commercial resurfacing. To ensure that the job went smoothly, our heavily experienced NK Asphalt team worked with Transperth to undertake the following:
- Provide traffic and pedestrian management.
- Liaise with additional contractors to cancel traffic sensors in roadway.
- Update all relevant parties regarding the upcoming changes and potential disruptions.
Stage 1: Site Preparation
As with many larger commercial jobs in high-traffic areas we were required to tidy the area and ensure we had a clear blank slate to work with, ensuring a smooth commercial surfacing job for the bus station.
Stage 2: Removal of Old Cement
With a tidy area to work within our expert team began removing the existing bus station’s cement-modified asphalt which was no longer operating at it’s previous standard. This process was carried out using an advanced piece of equipment called a profiling machine, also known as a cold planer or road milling machine which safety removed the commercial asphalts damaged layers.. Here’s how we approached this task:
Disposal of old cement
Once we had removed the old asphalt we safely disposed of the material and took it away from the site, allowing our team to safely prepare for a fresh commercial asphalt layer which would bring Transperth’s bus station back up to scratch.
Stage 3: Reinstatement of Base Materials
Upon our initial inspection of the site, the base materials were not structurally sound and would not make an adequate foundation for the new bus station commercial surfacing, especially with regards to Transperth’s high standards of safety and the government regulations required. As a result of this we reinstate the base materials before beginning work on our fresh asphalt surfacing project.
Stage 4: Lay New Asphalt
Now we meet the most critical and transformative phase of our commercial asphalt project for Transperth, laying the fresh commercial asphalt.
For this bus stop project, we applied a MRWA Intersection mix. This is a high-performance asphalt which is designed specifically for high-traffic areas such as bus stops and roads. Highly durable, with fantastic longevity, laying this asphalt was a fantastic upgrade to the previous old cement-modified asphalt.
Throughout the process, we maintained strict quality and safety control, checking thickness, and compaction levels to meet Transperth’s standards. The surface was finished to a high standard, resulting in a durable, smooth surface ready to withstand constant bus traffic.
Bus Station Commercial Resurfacing and Transperth Satisfaction
Our ability to meet strict deadlines, communicate effectively, and handle the bus station resurfacing quickly and effectively caused a great level of satisfaction from our client. By working proactively and ensuring everything went smoothly against pressing deadlines, both buses and passengers experienced minimal delays. The area was able to use again shortly after completion of asphalt being laid.
The key outcomes of this project include:
- A new smooth surface for improved traffic and pedestrian safety.
- The installment of a high-quality MRWA Intersection mix for ensured ongoing durability.
